Frequently Asked Questions
How do I write Morse code so this tool can decode it?
Use a dot (.) for a short signal and a dash (-) for a long one, a single space between letters, and a forward slash (/) or double space between words — for example "... --- ..." decodes to SOS.
Does Morse code support lowercase letters or punctuation?
Morse code itself has no concept of upper/lowercase — this tool converts everything to uppercase automatically. Common punctuation (period, comma, question mark, and a few others) is supported; unsupported characters are skipped.
What does the audio playback actually play?
A short tone for each dot, a tone three times as long for each dash, with silence gaps between symbols, letters, and words matching the standard Morse timing ratios — close to what you'd hear over an actual radio.
Is Morse code still used for anything today?
Mostly amateur (ham) radio, aviation navigation beacons, and emergency signaling (SOS is still internationally recognized) — it's no longer used for commercial telegraphy, but it persists as a hobby and a backup signaling method.
